To clarify, we always ended up digging the area up eventually, and since most of my work was in an urban area all the marks were usually still visible (why do they use permanent paint?). Of course by getting approximate locations up front I designed my jobs to avoid everyone else as much as possible and causing less aggravation for everyone involved.

We own a utility locating company that specializes in private and engineering locates in our region. It is staffed by two specialists with over 20 years each in locating utilities. I have seen other companies get off on abandoned lines or telephone lines and mismark HP gaslines and buried power lines by 30 feet or more. Frankly, sometimes it scares me what the responsibility is. You should also make sure your professional or business liability insurance is willing to cover you should you make a mistake. We do not allow our surveyors, including myself, to perform utility locates. Someday I might get trained but until then I will stick to surveying.
