Found this monument while completing a survey near one of the many Lighthouses on the Great Lakes (Northeast Michigan). The top has US LHE cast into it . . .
The newer one of the two lighthouses was built in 1840. Does anyone have links or information to track down the history of such a monument?
It's my understanding that the LHE was either a part of, or absorbed into, the United States Coast Guard.

On Monuments like that you may well have to hold the outside corner, that is, the monument is entirely on the property in question. Easy to prove if all 4 are found.

Interesting. This monument is at the position of a PLSS Meander Corner . . . on a peninsula. There is record of another on the East side of the peninsula (it's only about 1500 feet across). There is a standard round monument like we're all used to seeing. The position on the East shore is exposed to the direct force of Lake Huron storms and may have been destroyed, though they appear to be pretty durable at 7" x 7".
The link above to lighthouse digest has a lot of great info, including establishing that these monuments had to be set before 1910 . . .
Does anyone know where survey records for this Agency might be stored/accessed?
