Wow! They got the island filled to cover the wreckage of the 1900 hurricane where 9000 people perished.
Was that a drainage project or mass burial for bodies never located.
Here in 1916. Everything is copacetic after the 1915 storm.
Anyway...speaking of storm rebuilding , nice job by the Houstonians who have totally renovated the grand Saenger Theater in New Orleans.
It took 7 years and barge loads of Texas cash after Katrina but they did it.
Kudos to whoever it was.

The grade raising was done more to simply raise the ground level and buildings in Galveston as a measure against future hurricanes. Even large masonry structures were lifted with jacks, quarter-mile square areas of the city were enclosed by bulkheads and sand from hydraulic dredges was pumped in. A seawall was constructed along the Gulf shore. The wreckage was, of course, cleared away before the fill was placed.
The project worked fairly well. Damage from the 1915 storm was relatively minor compared to the 1900 storm, fewer than about 400 deaths in 1915 compared to about 9,000 in 1900.
I guess if New Orleans had anything other than mud available, something similar could be done there.
