Any ideas why my 5800 is no longer logging internally? I couldn't delete any files while connected with GPS Configurator. I tried to hold the power button down for a minute to clear the files but that didn't work. Eventually I formatted flash memory and the files are gone, but it still doesn't log internally. It does log through the TSC2. Any ideas?
Are you sure it used to log data? Almost all the 5800s I've ever seen do not have internal storage.
All Trimble 5800s had internal storage -
it just wasn't enabled in some of the very early (circa 2002) firmware versions.

Thanks for the responses. I think I have it figured out. I had to create a "POWER_UP" file. It is collecting data now, but OPUS won't process it in DAT or Rinex format. OPUS keeps aborting the file and saying something about fewer than 3 base stations remain...:-/

You need to wait more than 24 hours to try to process. Give it a try again tomorrow.
Also, make sure you read the OPUS instructions and get the data logging intervals correct, etc etc.

Hmm, now I have to find me an old software firmware update to test this out.
All Trimble 5800s had internal storage -
Beginning with Firmware Version 1.10 which was released in June 2003, 2 MB of internal data memory was enabled on all first-series Trimble 5800 receivers.
Even the very first 5800s to come off the assembly line in 2002 are eligible for installation of Ver 1.10 firmware.
(There once was a dippy product called the 5800 Limited, I dunno if it had internal data memory and am not interested enough to research that question.)

Here is some good documentation on the process I found. I also need to have that v1.1 firmware as a back up.
If someone does find it please post it or send me a message - thanks.

I have never updated the firmware in my 5800s, I looked yesterday and am running 1.03 I think.. I need to find me 1.10 ASAP.
My apologies to those following this thread -
The statement I posted on 28 October 2013 at 1559 hrs -

is not correct.
I forgot that in the fall of 2002 when Trimble introduced the 5800 the policy was that new receivers came standard with update eligibility for three months from date of sale to the end user. Later products included as standard one year of update eligibility, and that was what I was thinking when I misspoke.
Back in those earlier years, the date on the release notes for a firmware version was the best (and usually only) indicator of whether or not a specific receiver was eligible to install that firmware version. Now the Trimble download page clearly states the required firmware-option date for various versions, which is a big improvement.
Example - if a Trimble 5800 receiver has a firmware-option date of May 2003 (can be read with WinFlash PC program or a data collector) that receiver is eligible for any firmware version released during or before May 2003. Since Ver 1.10 firmware was released in June 2003 (supported by the date on the release notes for that version), the subject receiver is not eligible for Ver 1.10 firmware.
There were and are exceptions to the example in the preceding paragraph, but that is the general rule.
This week I am corresponding with someone whose 5800 has the May 2003 firmware-option date. The last information I received was that when he attempted to install Ver 1.10 firmware WinFlash requested a password. This indicates to me that the receiver is not eligible for Ver 1.10 firmware which has a June 2003 release date.
To make a receiver eligible for later firmware, you purchase a firmware-update contract from your Trimble dealer (they may refer to it either as a software extended warranty or as a "support" contract which is poor nomenclature because the deliverable is only a password). You receive a serial-number-specific 24-character alphanumeric password that advances that receiver's firmware-option date (typically) to the end of the month one year from the date on which you purchased the contract.
With the later firmware-option date, the newer firmware will install without asking for the password.
hardline228, if you send me an e-mail (with subject line "Trimble 5800 firmware") via the icon by my name I will direct you to a download for Ver 1.10 firmware. Please post back and advise us all if it installs in your receivers with the April 2003 firmware-option date. Will bet a nickel that it does not.:-(

Trimble 5800 doesn't flash -
Hi
I have a trimble receiver of 5800, i configure it through GPS Configurator, but it doesn't blink, which means that it is not collecting data.
Could you please help me
Thanks

What version firmware is loaded in your Trimble 5800? GPS Configurator will show that in one of its tabs.
How much memory does GPS Configurator indicate as being available?

Thank you for your response.
The firmware version is 2.27 and the left memory is 1841kB

Presuming you are using the instructions hyperlinked to earlier in this thread (Mapman's post of 29 October 2013) to configure your Trimble 5800 so it starts logging data at power-up -
Sometimes it helps to do a full reset of the receiver before creating/installing a POWER_UP.CFG file. You can find reset instructions for various Trimble receivers in this document. That would be the first thing to try.
Another thing I would suggest would be to go through the instructions while the receiver is actually tracking four or more satellites on both frequencies (the satellite LED will be doing its slow-blink once-per-second routine).
The green power LED on your receiver should start doing the once-every-three-seconds flash after you click OK at Step 10 on the bottom of page 4 of those instructions. (Leave receiver turned on and connected to GPS Configurator.)
Also, you should now see some non-zero numbers appearing in the part of GPS Configurator's "Log data" page that shows how many epochs have been stored for each satellite tracked.
If you do not see those things happening after completing Step 10 of the instructions, there may be a problem with your receiver.

thank you so much it finally worked.
Actually, i am using a tablet connected to the receiver through bluetooth. it detects satellites and starts loading data. but it doesn't say what the position is.
As a matter of fact, i want to determine the coordinates of some locations, that's why i connected it to tablet through bluetooth, that is impossible to use a laptop.
thanks
