Is it really the case that you cant use it with anything other Trimble Access? I dont have the money right now to get a Trimble Controller with Acess software so i thought i could borrow a controller from a Colleague with Carlson SurvCE or Fieldgenius or something like that. I have been running tests all morning and i cannot get it to connect.
On SurvCE
In GPS Base, menu
-On Current I select Legacy GPS, Model Trimble R8
-On Comms Type Bluetooth, Windows Mobile and i pair it with the correct Trimble Base model, i get Connection succesful
-On Receiver tab i select Integrated Antenna, Manufacturer Trimble and PArt Number Trimble R8s
-And on RTK tab, Internal Radio, i set the correct frequency set by manufacturer and cmr+ message type.
Then when i try to establish a connection i get "Sending Data", and an error "The Device did not repsonf to command 7"
Is it me and am i doing something wrong or is it really the case i cannot connect with anything other than a Trimble Controller?
It will only work with a Trimble collector, and one with a pretty recent release of Access to boot.
If you can get your hands on a DC with Survey Pro that may be workable too
Survey Pro will definitely work with it, I just don't know what version (of it or Access) you need to have for it to recognize an R8s.
I need to weigh my options before i purchase something.
-Can office applications like Trimble busines Center or Spektra Precision handle GPS equipment directly?
-Is survey Pro available for windows (7/8/10) or just windows mobile platform?

Trimble Business Center is purely an office application. You can purchase Access (and presumably Survey Pro) to run on any Windows tablet, but it's pricey (I believe $3500 for Access) and I would have reservations about it - mainly would the license be transferrable when I need to replace the hardware?
If you have an R8s you should talk to your Trimble dealer. Find out if they have anything used you could buy, what kind of trade-in deals they have on new TSC3s, and how much it would cost to purchase a firmware warranty on a used collector off of eBay or whatever. You could also try other dealers nationwide for used collectors with Access if you don't want to buy a new one.
And i would imagine spectra precision office is the TBC equivalent so no direct handling there either right.
Yes around 3500 was the quote i got for Access. I'll ask for a possibly used device. Is survey pro any more fair in Price?
I would expect it to be similar, but I don't know that much about Survey Pro, or if it's available as a stand alone.
Again, I would establish a relationship with my Trimble dealer... you may be able to get a good deal on a TSC3 right now if you have anything at all you can trade in on it.
FYI - I'm not affiliated with Trimble and don't profit or benefit from their sales; I'm just a former Certified Trainer who has knowledge about their products. And I know that I've been receiving e-mail offers from my local dealer for TSC3s.
Just to add, i got a quote for 1750 just for the survey pro license (which is exactly half of Access). Has somebody used it and can vouch for it? I would hate purchasing it and not having a gully functional GPS setup
I've run the R8-3's using Spectra Precision Survey Pro on a TSC3. Worked just fine. Access just works better when you're bouncing back and forth between RTK and S6. Im sitting on a TSC3 loaded with SP right now but it's company owned and needs software updating. Since going to Access/R10 haven't looked back.
Survey pro is $2700 for max. You can get a demo version of survey pro to play with only holds 25 points
I know for a fact Survey Pro is offered as a program that will run on any Windows 10 device. The R8S is a new model, so you will need the latest instance of either Access or Survey Pro w/ GNSS . Survey pro doesn't automatically support GNSS, it is an extra option.
I do not know anything about other brands working with other controllers, but I do know you surely can find a great deal on a Data Collector / Receiver combo pack. Used is a great way to go. Look at Martin or at Seller websites for deals. They are trusted dealers, whicheans its not stollen.

I got the latest demo from the spectra precision to evaluate it. You mean it holds 25 points per job or total between jobs? Eg If I have a Job with 5 points and 2 jobs with 10 points can i delete some of the points and store new ones?
Scratch my last post. So i played around with the demo and indeed it stops you at point #25 and does not store any more points. Besides are there any other limitations? Like connecting to your instrument, solving static, or anything else?
I would like to set my base on a known point and solve static with a Rover to a new point location, will i be able to do that in DEMO mode
You don't need a data collector to collect static data.
Interesting. Can anyone tell me how to access the data on R8s?
To collect static data on an R8 without a collector use GPS Configurator or Configuration Toolbox (both free utilities on the Trimble web site) to create a Power Up file that starts logging on power up - just make sure you're level and plumb when you turn on the receiver, and be careful turning it on and off. To retrieve the file(s) use the Data Transfer utility (also free on Trimble.com).
Thank You. BTW there was no data cable inside, do i have to buy one myself? Also can i connect GPS to my PC directly with bleutooth and get whts inside?
Besides creating a file isnt there a way to selectively ask the unit when to log and when not to. I dont want to always have it logging when powering up
It has a web UI that you can BT too; it's a bit of a pain.
You should be able to BT the data off with Data Transfer, you'd just have to set it up as a device. The cable to the lemo port can be purchased separately or as part of the Base Kit that they offer. The 9-pin port might need a null modem adapter if it's a straight cable, I don't remember.
