I currently have a 5800 receiver that I use for VRS. I am considering buying an R8 model 1 from a local survey buddy. Is there a big difference between the two..is the R8 significantly better? Can I use the R8 model 1 as a VRS rover like the 5800?
Thanks!

I don't think that the 5800 is GLONASS capable, the R8 is. THe R8 may have a transmitter included, so it can be your base station without separate radio- at least for short range.

You should have no problem using it with VRS.
The R8-1 is not GLONASS able.
The R8-1 does have a built in radio so it can act as a base for RTK, but it has to be turned on by Trimble at a cost.
The R8's are blue tooth or cable to the controller. I think the 5800's are cable only.
There is a definite difference. Initializations are gained and retained far better on the R8 vs the 5800. Bluetooth performance is much improved as well, as is internal memory.
My 5800 is Bluetooth and it does not have glonass abilities. I understand the ar8-1 doesn't have glonass either, so is there something else it has? More internal memory, fast processor? Thanks for the replies!
Correct, GLONASS was first introduced in the model 2.
The two biggest changes between the two that I know of is that the R8 will track the L2C signal and ups your internal storage from 2 to 6 megabytes. I know they are both 24 channel receivers but I am not sure if the Maxwell chip changed between the two receivers.
My Model 1 R8 was purchased to act solely as a VRS rover. It has the GSM 850/1900 MHz Radio Module which contains a sim card for internet corrections. It bluetooths with the data collector. Trimble Part # 53620-71. It does not receive Glonass.
@tatsurveyman is right, difference is the L2C and the internal memory. Just to give you more idea here is the link of the snapshot of R8 Specifications.
Hope it helps.

There are no service parts for either. Why buy something that's dead when it breaks?
Because it costs 1/5th of new gear and if you take care of it will last for a very long time?
