Trimble R7 & R8 T01 file problem

A friend of mine just bought some used Trimble gear on Friday. He got 2 Trimble R8s and a Trimble R7 w/ a Zephyr Geodetic Antenna.

They checked out fine on Friday when running RTK around the area, but today he is trying to collect STATIC data, and something isn't working properly.

All 3 receivers “appear” to be collecting data (lights flashing, wheels whirling, etc.), but the T01 files are ALL ~10k in length (regardless of duration), and I get the following error when I try and convert them to RINEX using Trimble's latest version of CONVERT TO RINEX

“Unhandled exception has occurred in your application....”

“GPS time of week out of range”
“Parameter name: gps time”

I have seen this error before, but I can't remember what the problem was/is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, it is possible that these units were NEVER used to collect STATIC data by their previous owner.

Edit...Oh Yeah, all receivers are running version 2.32

Try a hard reset and purge all old files?

If you have not already done so, it would make sense to reset the receivers and clear out all the old stored files.

A few years ago I prepared a document on resetting Trimble receivers that may help. For the Trimble R7, refer to the instructions for the 5700.

Are they being started by a DC or just turning them on? My receivers are older. I usually start them with the DC. Then I check the files to make sure that the file is being created and after a time to see if the size of the file is bigger. Then I also close the session with the DC at the end although you are supposed to be able to just turn the receiver off. You might start there by starting a session and seeing what is happening to the files during the session. You probably already done all this.

That could be it. The files could be full of short pre RTK start ups and no room for other new static files. I'm not sure about a 5700 but a 4700 will only store 42 files. Once it's full you can still start a RTK and a static but there won't be any static file collected. If the prior owner never used static they never needed to purge the files and its pretty sure it would be full of pre RTK short static files.

If I remember correctly there is a setting option to continuously roll out the oldest files to make room for the new files. Check that.

even if you erase files on the receiver they can still cause a problem. I think it is because they are recoverable, so the file info still takes up space in the directory table. I format the memory occasionally to avoid this problem. I don't remember the limit on number of entries, but I have reached it before, and the receiver simply will not store any more files. I don't know if that is still the case with newer firmware, but I "clean" the receiver occasionally just to be safe.

Loyal,

I'm pretty sure we have used that unit for logging static data. There was a CF card in the receiver, and if I remember right, when we set up the RTK Infill survey style, we had 15s epochs logging to the CF card, maybe it was receiver... Not sure if the R7's have an internal memory or not.

Have you opened the rinex file in notepad, and looked through the data? Some of our surveyors will send the rinex generated from the time the receiver was powered on to the time they hit "Start Base Receiver", and we only get a couple epochs of data. This is easy to spot because the rinex file is fairly small, similar to what you are saying around 10k.

Have him give me a call if this doesn't get resolved, and I can work it out with him. Also have him email me a rinex file so I can see what was getting generated.

Thanks Loyal

Tyler

I think he got it figured out.

I believe he may call you nonetheless.
