One of the less well designed parts on the S series total stations is the battery box.?ÿ It tends to get loose over time and the battery doesn't make as good contact or any contact or it comes in and out.
Today we encountered the issue when observing the backsight, target lock, measuring, gets it, store, "changing face", nothing, instrument not responding, starting robotic connection.?ÿ Restarted everything.?ÿ Then I remembered having similar issues with an older S6 I was using several years ago.?ÿ The problem is the mag drive must demand more voltage and the poor battery connection can't deliver killing the instrument momentarily.
The fix is to install Trimble Part No. 167454152 stroke A894432564 which amounts to 2 sheets of paper towel cut to size between the battery and the outer wall of the battery box to push the battery up against the contacts.?ÿ Problem did not reoccur after that.
A couple little dabs of silicone will accomplish the same thing and won't move all of the time
