I believe the internal battery on my Hiper Lite rover has bit the dust.
It has been acting up for some time now. Now it just blinks red and is not charging at all and does not fire up either.
How painful and how long does it take to get a new battery installed?
Thanks
Randy
Randy,
Sorry to hear that. I got a quote of about $400 per receiver to get the batteries replaced at the dealer.
Having said that, there is a place out of Oregon that sells replacement batteries for about $35 each, each receiver takes two. Several people have replaced the batteries themselves pretty easily. From what I have read, the hardest part is making sure you don't pinch the battery wires when you are putting everything back together.
Good luck,
Jimmy
we replaced batteries on our base several years ago, i forget the cost
they are now mesmorized again and i get 4-5 hours
i've been considering external power augmented with a solar panel, the unit should have come with the gator clips to plug into a 12v car battery (the XTs did)
we've never had an issue with the rover
good luck
Cousin, ain't there a "Topcon" dealer over in Austin? maybe you can get it done painlessly in a short period of time in your backyard...
Yup- done it myself as well. The battery wires are important to watch out for, as well as the rubber gasket around the faceplate.
It will run on 12v power.... Switch the config, the rover to the base an vice versa. Run the bad unit (now the base)on external power and have it repaired when it is convenient for you.
Modem Tps should do the trick 😉
Just changed the batteries on my base unit last week.
It took about 15 minutes to change them.
1. Allen Wrench to disconnect the front MINTER plate.
2. Gently pull away from receiver until partially out.
3. Disconnect (2) battery connections.
4. Pull receiver far enough out as to remove batteries from each side.
5. Replace with new batteries.
6. Press most of the way back into receiver (if you pull the internal boards all the way out, you will need to line the boards up with the slots to re-insert them). The battery wires had a natural tendency to slide back in with no chance of pinching, but many others have warned of being careful of not getting the wires stuck where they can be clipped by the other components.
7. Re-install the gasket around the MINTER making sure that the seal lines up with the screw holes.
8. Press internals all the way back into receiver.
9. Replace screws with allen wrench.
10. Place on charge (Note: I had to access receiver through PC-CDU to get both batteries to be recognized for charging.)
11. Charge overnight.
My base had gotten to where I would get just a couple of hours in warm weather and less than an hour in cold weather. I had been connecting to an external battery until I could find time to attend to changing batteries. I really wish I had just done it earlier, it was not nearly as much trouble or as worrisome as I had anticipated. After charging fully, I ran both units at my house and finally turned them off after 8-1/2 hours.

:good:
Thank you for the tip!
I was nervous about trying that and paid too much in the past.

Great write up Jon.
Just go slow and pay attention. Nothing to it. Save $300.

Wow!! I did not realize the amount of savings. I just didn't want to ship or drive over to the dealer's offices for something as simple as a battery swap.
Having read a couple of others posts on the matter, it seemed pretty straight forward.
I've done it --it's neither complex nor difficult but I'm with whomever said be careful with the wires. They are tiny and if you tighten the screws enough to crimp them you short out the battery and it is fried for good (I learned this the hard way)!! And yes, be careful with the rubber gasket. As to cost, I got two replacement batteries from these guys a few months go and have no complaints:

Do you know where to buy the gaskets for the minter plate??

Hi, can you explain the procedure to get both batteries recognized for charging?
I have this problem: I've changed the batteries, it works, but the receiver doesn't recognized it as internal batteries, also as external power supply... so I think it will not charge as internal batteries. Please HELP!
@jon-payne - About 9.5 years ago, you gave the outline of the procedure (above) for changing the batteries in the HiPer Lite - THANK YOU!!! This is most valuable information as I attempt replacing them in my HiPer Lite+ (Base) as soon as the new batteries arrive.
If you can't recall after 10 years, I totally understand, but prior to your step 1., in the outline above, should I consider to:
a.) Make sure the radio is turned off using Modem-TPS?
b.) Using PC-CDU, change the Power management settings to External mode and turn off the power to everything as shown below in the screenshot?
c.) Or instead, put the receiver in Zero Power Mode?
d.) Anything else I should consider doing
