Thoughts and opinions on this 'gun' am thinking of buying one.

Want to be fully robotic and work solo on stakeout, have the sokkia 4230RM however despite all my efforts just never have been able to work solo with it and i'm getting fed up of needing assistance or walking back and forth between the mini prism and total station.

Will already be set up with fc-100 and apparently read to work.

They are solid guns. Make sure you get the RC-2 with it. Get an external battery power converter and a "jump box" made to jump start cars. With this rig you can run all day on 1 battery. Don't expect miracles in the woods. These robots track pretty good but they have their limitations at steep angles and with thick woods. Reflectorless is good to about 100m. Make sure to know how to run the prism centering tracking adjustment routine and do it often (in the manual).

As long as you get it with the RC-II unit, it'll be a good acquisitiion!

I have that instrument, and am very pleased with it. The only issues that I have had with my particular gun, is that it won't track under 15 degrees (temperature). I just work in the office when it is that cold.

I also sometimes have to hit the quick lock key three times (3 separate searches), if the robot gets confused.

A few small quirks, but otherwise a solid instrument. Horizontal and vertical accuracy is very good. I would get the external power adapter and run the instrument off of an external battery source if you are going to get set up on one point for several hours.

you need the tribrachs with the extra pin so it's not loose in the saddle

I have this instrument and have had a positive experience so far. It gets the job done for a very good price. I would also recommend the RC-II for it.
I have two regular batteries and get a full day using both, but will soon buy the external power supply adapter for the times when it is sitting in one place for a while.

I am retiring from Wa practice and I am about to sell my Sokkia Set 4 230RM.
We recently took the instrument to the calibrating baseline with another companies' 2 Leicas and found only negligible or no differences in the measurements.
I will hate to see this gun go. It has been a tank for us.
