Yesterday I was working with a field engineer for a company that I am working with on a new construction project, and he is experiencing some series issues with his data collector.

He is using a Topcon FC2200. The low battery light is flashing, even with a fully charged battery. This particular data collector has the option to put in AA batteries. We tried than with brand new batteries. He is only getting about 3 to 5 shots before the battery on the data collector dies, and he is dead in the water.

I took a volt meter and checked the voltage on his data collector batteries, and they checked between 7.5 volts to 8.5 volts. The sticker says that it is a 7.2 volt battery if I remember correctly.

Does this data collector have an internal battery? He did say that the data collector had been dropped, and the touch screen had been replaced, but it had not been acting right since it had been back from the shop.

Any advice or tips you can provide would be appreciated. This guy I am working with is a really great guy, and he is at his wits end.

Thanks,
Jimmy

Sounds like the work done to the unit(my guess). Has he let the batteries go completely out of power yet?

I don't think so. He thought he had some bad batteries, but it is looking like it is the data collector itself.

He did say that it had been dropped, so maybe more damage was done than they thought.

I'd call the folks who worked on it Monday morning and explain. Batteries have a tendency to do some screwing things when not let to drain complete. It could be that the damage to the collector and the battery issues may be compounding and creating the prob. Just a guess...but I would let them know about it and have another look at. Are there any jobs that haven't been downloaded yet? It may require a hard boot.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give him a call tomorrow, and offer that suggestion. I do know that he will be ordering another data collector tomorrow.

I have had nothing but trouble out of my FC 2200. Every 6 months I am sending it in to the shop for power issues. I have had the power board replaced twice and it has quit again. The retailer said they have stopped selling this unit due to the issues everyone seems to be having. Hope yours got fixed and hope mine will as well.
Has anyone else had other issues?
