Sometimes, vibration can affect just the instrument upon it.
A long-since-retired PC told me once they had set up a theodolite on a dock. Vibration had slowly worked loose the instrument hold-down screw and when they picked it up for the day... into the drink it went.
I reckon that's taking the term "plunging the scope" a tad too literally-
