I needed to define the south and west lines of the SE1/4 of Section 31. I already had the SE corner but nothing else. So I went to the south 1/4, it's there, kinda, in probably the most empty land you can imagine there is a random two track running SW-NE and it intersects the section line right at the 1/4 which is now lying loose next to the road all broken up :pissed:

So on to the SW corner which is there, this is the SW corner of Section 31 which makes it a township corner.

Not only a township corner but on a standard line.

Not only a normal standard line but the base line, so it's a Section corner, township corner and base line monument.

It's a tiny thing, 4x5", not much of a monument.

A look at the base on a high nob, there isn't much out there to get in the way of GPS.

There is only one place around here, Love's Lookout, that 4å± ranges can be seen from and it has to be very clear to do that.
We got too many trees for all that open ground sightseeing..........
:good:

4"x5" isn't bad if it's long and well-set. Any idea how deep it goes?

I once hooked onto a survey by a normally reputable local firm that called for a found 6"x8" concrete monument with iron pin at a section corner. I found the monument, and it was indeed 6"x8", but unfortunately it was only 6" "long" and basically just sitting on the surface getting kicked around by the cows. But beneath it I found the remains of a 6"x6" redwood fence post, so I drove a 1-1/2" pipe into that and called it good.

It's firmly planted, and I do have other monuments to "prove" it, it is N89-87E 5285 to the SE Sec31 and from there it's N89-58E, 5286 to the SE Sec32. Those are true north bearings, to the west it's N89-58W, 5292 to the SE Sec35.

It's a marked stone, kinda smaller than the notes call for, but I'm not digging it up, I'll just leave it as it is. There are no remaining accessories, I set a couple while I was there, just in case something happens to it. It does have history, a big fence post lying near and some lath, someone used it for some reason, but there is nothing filed on it. Probably tied during some exploration.
