A Richard L Schaut page

> Ignorance of pertinent laws is no excuse.

I think it would be great if Richard were to contribute a biographical sketch that would explain the process by which he has arrived at the conclusions he has. I'll bet that many other surveyors will be interested to know whether it was just an adaptive response to a market that only wanted to pay $400 for a a survey of a quarter section in some area where the original PLSS corners hadn't been maintained very well or arose from other causes.

I know most of what I've read from him for probably 15 years now has been during the retirement phase.

Still incapable of making a substative comment on the material of my posts?

Also no apology from you yet on your inability to adequately interpret my section corner tie sheets that you posted and fumblingly 'critiqued'

Shame on you.

That's an excellent suggestion, Richard. Showing what passes for a PLSS corner record in different parts of the US would probably be a great topic in connection with a discussion of what one ought to look like to actually perpetuate the original PLSS corners.

I like the simple categories... the whole setup has a catchy and "hip" flair to it.

Hey why don't the two of you cut it out. Let's not..

stain a good start to something that could have a great impact on not only current licensed surveyors but also the ones that are working on getting their license. this just seems to be something that could turn the possible contributors off because of petty bickering. Let's be pro's and move on!

I believe this thing has a lot of potential. Another poster mentioned calibration. Might be a good idea to go over the ways of 25 years ago to the ways of today. And then offer suggestions of how they keep in adjustment their own equipment ( I bet that would be interesting).

Also, we may want to look into states that require PDH's and see if a contributor to the handbook can obtain PDH's by writing an article that's published.

That's like telling the Israelis and Palestinians to "just get along."

Handbook Topic

"Tips and Techniques of the Solo Surveyor."

or another way to put it

"Teaching an old dog new tricks"

Lots of ways to skin a cat.

Well, okay. Richard doesn't absolutely have to submit a bio sketch. It would be interesting, though. I do think that the subject of basing nearly all surveys on what are imagined to be titles ripened by adverse possession (although unproven) would be an interesting one, though.

Unusual practices

Well, I had more in mind showing aspiring surveyors some of the reasons why surveying practices that look a bit strange developed. Certainly the economics of land surveying have probably been a big factor in many areas where the emphasis has been on trying to find shortcuts for boundary determination.

suggestion -
"Field guide to rebar types" be changed to "monument" types. Elsewise it would be quite a short field guide :-/

Butch....I am guessing you haven't seen Kent talk about rebar.

Yet, I still agree. Maybe other monument types should also be discussed in the same proximate area.

Am I missing instrument calibration, tribrach adjustments and rod level calibration and checking?
