Most EDMs work by sending an infrared light beam that is modulated by a radio frequency that has a wavelength of 5 or 10 meters, maybe another round number. They start with a longer wavelength (lower frequency) to get the ballpark and then go down to one of those numbers as their shortest wavelength and measure its phase to get the fine reading. So if the return signal was noisy or interfered with on the "ballpark" reading it could pick the wrong 10 meter integer to go with the fine reading.

This never happened before global warming. I had a topcon 300 series that sent back bad distances from rain drops one time. That was the last time I used an instrument in the rain. I have been gun shy ever since.
