One of my friends posted this photo of a survey marker that she stumbled across recently:

The "Boston Museum of Science" as the responsible agency was a bit off the beaten path considering that the marker is on the edge of the Grand Canyon.
As it turns out, Bradford Washburn, then the Director of the Boston Museum of Science got the idea back in about 1970 that the Grand Canyon ought to be mapped at a large enough scale to really show trails and details, and then set about making that happen.
