A DEEP-1 marker. The hole was my search for the center south 1/16 cor. as monumented
in 1987 by the BLM. They set a 28" stainless steel post, 28" long, 2-1/2" dia., 26" in the ground, with a brass cap mkd ..... The description in their notes continues with
Deposit white "DEEP-1" magnetic marker at the base of the stainless steel post.

The DEEP-1 was dug up before I could ascertain it's orientation. I am somewhat surprised that the marker did not have a stronger "magnetic signature".

Anyway, down in the La Pine, Oregon area the soil is relatively young, being volcanic
pumice from Mt. Mazama and others. It makes for some very easy digging.

Are we to conclude that someone dug out the SS monument? Souvenir hunters, or irate adjoiners?

I have not confirmed this, but I believe that when
Klamath County rebuilt and paved Beal Road that they
destroyed the mon.

That is the typical result of looking for monuments in a Texas highway R/W.

All the changes from natural grade to highway grades have destroyed most everything from one R/W the other.

Well it's a damn fine hole just the same. And real nice scenery, too. 🙂

The last magnet I found was there, still there, still there, gone. Stuck to the shovel.
