Darn that Kent!
Jeff's the quickest draw in the west! too funny
It's funny that you post that.
I got a call yesterday from a woman who just moved to my area of WV from TX. She wanted an estimate for a boundary survey on a 2 acre parcel. After I gave her my estimate, her response was, "Wow! You've got quite a price there! I had 12 acres surveyed back home and it didn't cost that much!".
Don't mean a thing David - I've had people from West Virginia tell me the same thing when I give them a quote to survey land here. The story is the same, only the people telling the story are different.
right on Jeff.
Also, the 2 ac. vs. 12 ac. comparison is BS. We've charged more on some two acre surveys we've done than we have on some 12 acre surveys we've done. Tract size is not as big a consideration in pricing as some seem to think.
ME: "$600 to set/mark the four corners of your platted lot."
CLIENT: "Oh, I really need just the one side, could you mark two corners for $300"
[sarcasm]Sure lady, that's how we bid jobs, $200 a pin. Maybe if your husband helps we can do it for even less.[/sarcasm]
I know it doesn't mean much. I do know that surveying around the city and surveying in the country are totally different. I worked around Atlanta for about 12 years before moving here. Comparable projects cost 2-3 times more here. I am not as out of line with that statement as you may think.
I wasn't trying to start an argument. I just thought the circumstances were funny. That's all.
:good:
this is the same company that was talked about a couple days ago
they do not have offices in Texas

Report sent to the TBPLS
I just sent information to a member of the Board. Hopefully, they will be gone soon.
Report sent to the TBPLS
are they a firm or contractors?

I see your one from a couple of days ago says "survey anywhere in Colorado" - a Texas ad? (But maybe that was brought up in the old thread?)

Jack,
Was that on the Craig's list ad?
I sent an email to Garey Gilley a couple of days ago about their website and he said the board was already dealing with that.

Sorry there David, I didn't take it that you were trying to start an argument at all - sorry if it sounded that way, it's all good. I guess what I should have said was that it doesn't matter where folks are from, it was always cheaper back home. But when I read it, I remembered an old man from West Virginia that we did several surveys for some years ago. He was a real nice fellow, but was always hard to please and never happy with any price, because it had always been cheaper back home. He had been here for 10 years before I met him and if I had thought about it back then, I probably would have told him that everything was cheaper 10 years ago. But he always paid his bill and he always called back. Come to think of it, he was a pretty good client.
This may have been the company or it was another similar operation that has contacted me in the past to do surveys for them.
The gave me their spill about they would keep me busy from time to time and wanted me to name my territory.
My answer was that I would give them an estimate of everything they sent my way and the final invoice would be what it was depending upon the property.
They said that was not their way of doing business and they would pay a set fee for my services if I signed on.
My final sentence was "that was not how I did business, it was as mentioned, and that they could do what they wanted, I have work to do........"
I guess there will always be someone that can't get their license somewhere and prey upon the needs of those that don't know better.
😐
I remember Henry Sipe from WV writing an article in an ACSM
journal complaining about high surveying prices for coal miners
in WV. Gosh, I thought union coal miners made a bunch of money.
When Henry Sipe was on the BOR, they fined a land surveyor for
doing a Cadillac survey.
My former boss said, "If you want to find rich people, go to an area
where everything looks poor. You will find some super rich people and
houses."
