Any reports on the Topcon HR unit?
It has an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) in it.

Any time I see something new on the horizon, I think, Where is a field report, from somebody in the dirt, using it?
I like the light weight, and small size. 1 KG is listed as it's weight.
Does it ONLY work with a Topcon Controller, which is not really out yet?
As we move toward better and better tools, Surveying quality should go up....

While we are at it, I have had my Javad now for just under a year.
It has gotten alot of updates, since I got it.
It now does static, in parallel. Can do pretty seamless shots, in static, 15 miles away, no problem.
When I got it, it worked in 5 hz beast mode. Well, it now has gone back to 1 hz mode, via the radio, but it functions at the base in 5 hz, via some kind of interpolation. It works faster than ever now.
It also now can operated in TILT mode, ie, you can stick it out sideways, over a creek, and shoot centerline. It does not have to be within 5å¡ of plumb.
It also can operate in TILT mode, correcting for tilts, and it can be tilted pretty far. Maybe some 20å¡ (I'm not sure how far, but it just got changed).
I have managed to bang it up a bit. Shows a few bruises, but nothing hurt. It is holding up well.
I seen the next 20 yrs for surveyors as a very good time to be a surveyor.

I have tested the Hiper HR. Very good GNSS system.
Pros:
Very light weight
Small foot print, smaller than a soft ball
Metal or allow strong shell, appears very rugged
UHF antenna is on top, hated the Hiper V radio antenna pointing down
No need for external software like PC-CDU or TRU to interface with receiver. Can access everything via WiFi from smart phone or PC
Web interface is very cool, easy to use to configure and download your static files
Comms include LongLink Bluetooth, multi-spectrum Bluetooth, UHF radio, cell modem and WiFi
452 channels for GPS, GLONASS, Galiileo, BeiDou, QZSS, SBAS, L-Band
Update/Output rate up to 100 Hz
Micro SD storage up to 32 GB
9-axis TILT compensation up to 15å¡
A digital level bubble shows on the controller screen
Can take a shot with no button pushing. Simply program it to store point when the tilt sensor is within the user specified acceptable range
Works with Magnet Field v4.x
Battery are small light weight
Ships with 3 batteries per receiver
Cons:
Single battery life is just å±4 hours
External battery charger seems very flimsy and cheap
Very expensive over $50k for a decked out pair
Extra $ for Galiileo, BeiDou
Extra $ for tilt IMU
Extra for near each add-on option
No OPUS antenna spec available
Overall, if I had the money, I would trade up.
Any comment on the IMU?
Is it significant, or not?
Thanks,
N

Nate,
It is new technology. I'm told Topcon wasable to identify the short comings others have had with IMU, and correct that to introduce a accurate IMU. Topcon has used IMU on machine control for many years, while other vendors have not.
I used the Tilt feature a few days, and really liked it for topo. No need to look past the controller screen to find the bubble on the pole. In auto mode,no need to look at control at all. The user is prompted with an audio alert when tilt and RTK tolerances are met. The digital bubble shows up on the controller in Magnet. The 3 separate calibrations for tilt and compass took a few minutes. I did not try pushing the limits. Such as a 15å¡ tilt, and check that to a known point.
At this point I don't see the IMU significant enough to just that hefty price tag.
