Just returned from a quick trip to Hong Kong. Out my hotel window was the most massive array of excavation and material handling equipment I've ever seen. I think they're building an underground highway along the waterfront. Was looking for the surveyors on the job, to no avail (at least not to be seen from the 28th floor.
At quitting time (around 5 pm), I was walking by the site when an entourage passed: One gentleman, carrying nothing; two following, each carrying a wood/composite tripod; two more, each carrying prism poles, one following him with the instrument, and one more carrying the note book. Something for all you solo guys with your robots to dream about.
Must be a South African surveyor. Sounds pretty normal to me 😉
Western countries have forgotten how to survey. We are slaves to the robot.
Minimum wage in HK is $30HK dollars/hr. Which is equivilant to something under $4US dollars.

When I was solo I tried to straddle the "old" and "new" schools; I used a robot, but drove to the job site in an ox cart.
