I was unaware of an east coast earthquake that had an intensity considered enough to alter the height or elevation of the monument. I think that was an K & E transit in the 30's photo, but not sure of that. Must have been a fun survey.

Magnitude 5.8 probably isn't enough to hold anyone's attention in Orange County but, as it equaled the biggest one on the east coast since they have been keeping records, it was reported in all the papers at the time.

The 1930s survey used a Parkhurst theodolite. See: http://celebrating200years.noaa.gov/theodolites/parkhurst.html
