This week's task, recover / retrace existing RW Monumentation, to perpetuate the RW.
Original RW was acquired in 1940.
Current plan is based on old standards- late 1980's
that method-
1-have consultant recover and tie the PLSS corners
2-in-house protract/ super-impose the parcels onto that
3-etch-a-sketch in the new RW
4-tie it into the existing RW at the project limits and at random places along the route, at new plan station but no offset distance with my favorite phrase "RW=EX RW"- taking care to ensure that the tie ins are on the curve along the existing RW. Avoid any controlling calls or existing breaks.
5-kick back-pound pud-yuck-yuck
6-wait 10 years- acquire a few parcels with shaded deed exhibits
7- repeat steps 5 and 6
8-let contract- begin clearing and grubbing.
FWIW- of the 17 surveys that abut the old RW, NOT ONE indicates recovering an existing monument....... so far we haven't either....:-/
rant off
I really hate seeing that on a plan
What you have described is far too common. Many times what that really meant was the "apparent" edge of what the public was using. There was no record document to be found stating where the true right-of-way was to be located. Of course, the more modern construction effort wiped out all visible signs of that earlier public use.
A related gripe is providing reference ties to a monument where all of the ties will be destroyed during construction of the new project.
late 1980's
So is this one of those old holdover DOT metric jobs?
I really hate those things!
