Has anyone had any experience with the Motion F5 tablet PC? It is built to military specs and looks very rugged. http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&sku=A6328020&~ck=baynoteSearch&baynote_bnrank=0&baynote_irrank=0 .
May be a bit pricey though...anything out there comparable at a cheaper price?
The Panasonic Toughbook range seem to have this sector of the market pretty much to themselves. They are also pretty darned pricey
That Dell has pretty good specs - how does what you would pay for a similar Panasonic stack up?
You could probably buy (and destroy) three or four ordinary tablet PCs for the same price - do you really need the waterproofing?
I should probably add that I'm a bit biased - I use an IBM (now Lenovo) tablet as my main machine 🙂
What you have to remember is that there is "MILSPEC" and then there is "MILSPEC". It's a grossly misued term in describing many items such as this.
There's an Aussie unit called a "Walkabout" that looks pretty tough. They drive a truck over it in a video and it still works. Then there was a "MILSOPEC" tablet called an "Explorer" that we got. Crew chief dropped in in the office on the carpet and it cost over $1500 to repair.
Have them quote which "MILSPEC" they meet. Remember, EVERY item in the military invemtory has a specification, or a "MILSPEC". If you do not know the milspec number and wehat it entails, that claim to meet "MILSPEC" is totally meaningless.
We use the Panasonic Toughbooks and, so far, they have held up well. May be a bit pricey, but they are as powerful as the computers on the office desks. The field data software is pretty much the same as our office software so the transfer of data has worked very well.
Take a look at MobileWorxs, there may be a product in there that meets your specifications.
