Can this type of radio be configured to function as a repeater?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Pacific-Crest-PDL4535-GPS-Base-Radio-Repeater-450-470MHz-Positioning-Data-Link-/321532803296?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4adcd938e0

I have a similar one, and nearly always run it at 1 watt.

I like 1 watt, and think maybe adding a repeater would make it even more handy.

Any advice on how to set up a repeater?

Thanks in advance.

Yes I THINK you can. We had one up until about 3 years ago. There is some software we had that you hooked the radio up to a computer and could configure it. It also took a cable that had a hook up for a car style battery.

I'll also add one reason we no longer use that radio is we traded it in for a new system because of the narrow banding requirement. I'm not positive but I don't think that Pac Crest PDL can be narrow banded.

Yes you can config this radio as a repeater in PDL mode using PDLconfig.exe

If you can't find it on the web, send me an email.

Yes, but...

It is not narrow banded, most likely. (Although it might/could be.)

In which case you would need a 'special' fcc license and to use it in the 19.2 kbs mode (which few devices or software supports.)

Thank you, Lee. I will look for it on the web. I used to have PDL config, on this computer, but I had to do a re install, and lost it. I remember using it before.
Thanks.

What kind of wire runs from the battery to the radio? Is it the same kind that runs from Battery-Radio-GPS receiver? Or is it a different wire?

Mark

When You run in LOW power, you can go without a license. So, low power with repeater... and we are singing again.

Nate,

I believe this is the power cable for that radio.

It looks like a large lemo connection.

Thank you, Lee.
Will the other kind work? (The 3 way one, like a regular base uses)

Uhhh, IDK!! What is a "regular base" to you??

To me a regular base is my Hiper V, with internal radios.

That radio is a Pacific Crest Radio, just yellow w/Topcon label instead of blue.

There is only one port on the back. This single port is power and data. You need the Y cable.

The other connector on left, below toggle switch is the antenna connector.

This is the cable I have,

Will this cable also work as a power source for the radio, if configured as a repeater?

Thanks!

If it will work, I'd prefer to have 2 identical cables, in case one goes bad, than to have 2 different ones.

The extra plug in, that connects to the GPS unit, can just dangle....

Yes. that cable will work.

Just once you setup the repeater mode ,all you will need is to add power, at that point the data portion of your cable not needed. But it will work.

Thanks Lee. That will allow my cables to be the same.

I have been wanting to do this for a long time. Most of my work is fine on low power. This will let me reach out.

Another question.

When a repeater is set up, do you set both base, and repeater on the same channel? (taking turns with the channel)

Or, do you set the base on channel 1, and repeater to receive on Channel, 1, but transmit on Channel 2?

Does it add signal latency?

Thnks!

I haven't done a repeater setup in a long time. So don't remember all the settings.

Send me an email, I can send a PDF of settings.
