Have you tried the image sensor reticle offset adjustment. That's what it sounds like to me. You need to sight a circular prisim at over 300'(off the top of my head) and the instrument will calculate a new offset from the optical crosshairs to the CCD camera "crosshairs". So I do the tilt axis and collumination a lot and if I still have more than 10" face 1 to face 2 shooting a prisim then I do the image sensor reticle offset adjustment. This has always brought the instrument into an acceptable range for me.

1. Leica rocks (best instruments ever, no contest)
2. Trimble-bots (almost Leica quality)
3. Topcon robots (worst ever, need to hire an I-man to point the stupid thing)I am running a brand-spanking new Topcon DS series robot - wish I could throw it under a passing loader! Worst vertical errors I've seen, since my early days as an I-man with a Sokkia Set4B. I've collimated it over and over to no availing difference. Just today, I was getting 0.04 vertical deltas on a 250' backsight leg. Come on, really?
And sighting angle errors - atrocious! I only use Leica circular prisms (best prisms ever) for traverse and backsight and the stupid robot can't consistently find the center. Super frustrating as I am a 1-person crew 95% of the time on a construction site.
I'm sure i sound Leica-biased, but the manual Topcon instrument I personally own turns beautiful horizontal and vertical angles. And i loved the Trimble series bots (S6, S8, VX) for accuracy - almost didn't need a level, the verticals were so crazy accurate.
I'm just saying IMHO, watch that Topcon like a hawk. I have to turn the tracking off, accurately hone in on the target, turn the track back on and then shoot said target, basically forcing it to center up.
Atleast Topcon's Hiper V GNSS rocks!!!!
Steven,
You or your boss went the cheap route. The DS is the lowest end Topcon Robot with out any type of quick lock system. IMO it is only half a robot. More suited for short range construction work, not survey. Suggest you try using a PS Robot with RC5 or with HyBrid GPS. Not sure if the DS will can be used with the RC5.
I also only look through the scope for DR measuring... unless the point is close and I can easily see the laser pointer then I don't even look through.
Also regarding cheap 360 prisms. I was buying the 360 prisms from a supplier for about 850. I found the same prisms on ebay brand new from China for 180. (Trimble style 360 also used with Focus machines) I've had that now 8 months. No issues whatsoever. I've tested it on known baselines. No issues. To me for the work I do, it's worth saving the 700 bucks.

That isn't true Lee- The DS is an entry level robotic system that has an upgrade path that includes the RC5 and Hybrid positioning and Hybrid search options. The DS base model can be upgraded to a full tracking robot from a motorized auto-pointing instrument. This allows a customer to switch from a manual total station to a less expensive entry level motorized and then upgrade as time and funding allows to a fully robotic system that is on production par with the PS. There are many surveyors using it as a fully robotic hybrid system with Magnet Field.
Pat,
You should read the entire post before replying, rather than reading only my post.
It appears you are following me on this site, and often comment on my post. I have never felt I needed an alias, as I have nothing to hide. But your reply's are annoying me enough to not post at all.
I suggest you add your employer and position to your signature so others can understand your point of view.
