Me: Good morning, how can I help you.
Her: I'm having a privacy fence built and apparently I need a survey so I get it built in the right place.
Me: That's an excellent thought. (plus a few minutes trying to figure out where she is)
Her: So, can you come out today and do that?
Me: (Rolling on the floor) Uh, no, that isn't possible.
Her: How soon could you be here?
Me: To be honest, it would be about three to four weeks at the earliest.
Her: Oh, that won't work. Do you know anyone else that could survey it for me?
Me: Yes, I do, but I have no idea of their schedules or availability. (Give her two names and phone numbers)
Her: Thanks! Bye!
Oh well, another golden opportunity to get rich has been allowed to get away.
Four hours later: Ringggggggggggggg, Ringggggggggggggg!
Her: Remember me? I called earlier.
Me: Yes, how can I help you?
Her: I can't find anyone who can get here sooner than what you said and they both sounded terribly expensive.
Me: Oh, really? (Knowing they shot a high price just to convince her they weren't going to leap on her little job and ignore some juicier projects)
Her: Yes, they both said about $XXXX for something this simple.
Me: I believe I told you earlier that your particular subdivision has some serious problems in some places. Maybe close to your property, maybe not. It will not be simple.
Her: Yes, you told me that, but they didn't seem to be aware of that and they still wanted a big price. How much do you think it will cost to do this.
Me: (An honest estimate roughly $300 below the $XXXX above) However, that is merely an estimate. I hope there isn't a problem, but, it is possible it could be more.
Her: Well, I want you to do it. You seem to be honest and helpful, and I appreciate that.
Congrats! Perhaps our profession is slowly on the march toward "they need us" more than "we need them". Many keep saying that there are not enough surveyors to replace those retiring...I hope they're right!
> .....You seem to be honest and helpful, and I appreciate that.
Good work, H.C. ...
But does she realize what your crew looks like?

Hopefully they won't sneak back and paint "EAT MOR CHIKIN" on her fence after it's built.
That's the great thing about ring rings. I don't know what she looks like and she doesn't know what the crew looks like. Udderly delightful.
I was hired once by an older woman who didn't like the neighbors looking at her while she sunbathed in the buff. After I met her, I thought that if I was the neighbor, I'd be the one putting up the fence!! 🙂
:good: 😀 😀

So who handled it better? Seems as though her actual neighbors got her to pay for a survey, pay for a new fence, and they don't have to look over there any more..... and your way would have cost you thousands of dollars. 😛

Had you seen this woman, you would've built a fence also - cost not an issue! Really!
When my granddaddy was in his 70's, his neighbors put up a fence around their pool because he'd sit on the carport and watch them.
