A rear view mirror from any model Buick makes a great tool to put some light in a manhole and see what is going on...without the need for batteries.;-)

> Didn't someone come up with a pole that held 2 prisms? You shot the 2 prisms and it would calculate for you, the XYZ at the end of the pole...

That gets you the invert but not the pipe size.

My dad would just hold me by my feet, and if I passed out, he'd pull me out real quick.

you'd get the pipe size, if you shot the top and bottom and subtracted the elevation.

The easiest/cheapest answer is the pipe-mic. I've talked to people that have one and they say it's hard to keep the pole plumb and the attachment from flexing under pressure, but that it can be done.
Nobody said it was going to be easy, at least not to me anyway.

I worked with a guy that had a 4' digital carpenters level that read the slope and he would calculate the plumb distance. Now that one would only work for pipe inverts.

For getting pipe sizes, I rub keel on the side of the rod, then scrape it on the pipe. I can usually get a good idea of pipe size that way.

If it is really deep and tough to get any of the information accurately, I put a disclaimer in my notes and let them know to achieve any greater accuracy, I will need to employ OSHA approved confined space entry procedures.;-)
