I imagine we all get a little arrogant at times. It might come with the territory (so to speak). It sure makes it hard to work with each other, though.
a bunch of cheap inconsiderate bastards--thank you my tukus, buy ya a round again, my tuckus,, its an insult if the reciever of the work doesn't call the surveyor give him a big thank you and tell him to watch his mail--a 10 percent gratuity is the least you can do--tdd
Referrals
I've been referred by others, and I have referred others.
I always thank them if I know it was a referral.
Around here it has been common practice to send clients to one or another surveyor those projects that appear to be right up their alley when you are too busy or not interested.
The kudos come when the surveyors talk or meet somewhere or not. Among friends, there has not been any missed recognition if doesn't.
It goes both ways, sometimes, you are just wanting the client to hear another version of NO.
I have had clients ask me to do something so far away that I have consulted the State directory and picked someone I've never met or to send that section of the directory to the client to choose for themselves.
My business has been mostly word of mouth advertising and reputation. It is just courteous to something to show appreciation when you have the chance.
You get what you give.
Another way to go about it is on jobs you don't have time for or don't want for whatever reason, give the other surveyor the potential client's info and let them make the contact. Back in the good old days (a couple years ago) I was getting so many calls for surveys I couldn't possibly call them all back and get anything else done, so another local surveyor would come in about once a week, look at the pile of requests and take a few of them to see if he could help the people. Usually by that time, I had at least made a copy of the assessor's map and maybe some other stuff that might be useful in estimating the job. I never heard that anybody minded that I had given out their phone number to another surveyor.
Also, in those good old days, I really didn't have time to mess with elevation certificates unless they were for a project I was already working on, or for a good repeat client. Now, they are OK for a little fill-in job, but still not a big money-maker. I had everybody in the office trained to refer those to a certain engineer that liked doing them. I got some feedback from a couple of people that made me change that habit. If you refer somebody to the wrong person, it can come back to bite you, although it doesn't seem like it should.
In some states, any payment for referrals violates the BOR ethics rules.
its always about the money--
lie all you want--but if money and profit is not on top of your game plan--better leave now you'll never succeed---
if your talking to someone who was referred to you you owe a debt of gratitude and trust to not only do a good job but to get a reasonable fee to share with the referring party---tdd

If success was measured by the amount of money one has, then drug dealers in Columbia are very successful people.
