I saw last night that there is a website that sells the guts for battery re-builds-

Any of you use these/ done this?

http://www.sabahoceanic.com/epages/sabahoceanic.sf/en_us/?ObjectPath=/Shops/sabahoceanic/Products/29091001

This doesn't include Perry Williams' adventures with D cells and a chunk of 2x4....

I used to rebuild my own bats, but I found out that Batteries Plus will do just as good a job and not cost much (if any) more than me buying the cells to do it myself. I qualify this by saying you want to be sure Batteries Plus has a good tech doing the work.

Ditto that. I had several old Geodimeter horseshoe batteries rebuilt at Batteries Plus and they did a fine job. In fact, they were able to upgrade the batteries used from the old ones without having an impact on the voltage output. The horseshoes lasted about 6 hours after that and previously (before they needed to be replaced) were only good for about 4 hours.

I have done my own with no problem. Just pay attention to the circuit, draw a sketch if you need to. Use rosin fluxed solder, not use acid fluxed and do not overheat. If you are not comfortable doing your own, send them in.
