FWIW, I found Naomi Orestes ( book link to Amazon site?ÿ https://www.amazon.com/Plate-Tectonics-Insiders-History-Modern/dp/0813341329) on the history of the theory to be an enjoyable read. Opinions vary. It is a series of articles written by many of those involved. It does include mention of the prior hypotheses and the discusses resistance to the theory.
