I retired my HP 48GX with TDS standard data collector. Got a TDS Pocket PC Recon data collector. How do I read & print the RAW files on a PC? The old files had a RW5 extension.

"Generally" you would drop the file into some CAD software, and the RAW data file within that system will allow you to edit and manipulate it. It would look something like a spreadsheet readout.

But, if that's not the way you want to do it, try changing the extension from whatever it is to a .txt extension like was said above and you can view it. Make sure you do this from a COPY of the file (and add a 1 or A to the file name) so that you have an unedited/unbastardized file in case you can't convert it back.

The old SMI files were great about this, I'm not sure about the TDS files. I can do this to a Carlson file also, but I don't think it converts back very well.

Or just open the file in any decent text editor -- there's no need to change the extension.

Double-clicking on a file name to launch an application can be handy, but it's good to remember that Windows file associations needn't limit the applications with which you can manipulate a file. Even binary files (e.g. DWG, jpeg, PDF) can be directly edited with the right tools if you know what you're doing.

Don't know the Recon, but the Ranger/TDS RAW files can just be re-named to RW5 and then opened in Carlson Survey (or used with other software), or used the same way the HP RW5 files were used. And those obviously can just be opened up in a text editor, if you need to.

I keep a copy of the RAW as my archive.

Change the extension from *.raw to *.rw5. Works like a champ.
