Looking for the best way to utilize R8s as static receivers.?ÿ What is the easiest way to go about this application??ÿ In the model 2s I believe setting up collect data as soon as powered on was an option in the setup, is that possible with the Model 3s??ÿ Or is it simply best to start with a control and collect onto the receiver?

I think there are two or three ways to go here but wondering what people are having success with.

Using GPSconfigurator you can set the model 3 to start collecting at power up. However, if you want to use the DC to put in station info (point name, HI, etc), then it will stop the survey and start a new one.?ÿ

For many years I only used the R8 for static, and always ran it without a data collector. Now that I do a lot more RTK and VRS, I often turn off the auto-start. Otherwise, it will populate the onboard memory with a lot of small files, and even though the memory is not full there is a risk of using up all of the directory entries, in which case it will act like the memory is full.?ÿ

It has been a little while since I have tried the GPS Configurator but if I recall correctly this procedure worked on the Model 2s not the 3s.?ÿ I will attempt to retry that this morning.?ÿ

John,

In regards to your post, I had 2 follow-ups.

1.?ÿ Is it possible to start with the data collector and not include station info??ÿ I prefer to add that information when bringing the files into TBC.

2.?ÿ Regarding the directory entries.?ÿ I'm not sure if this is related.?ÿ I have one R8 Model 2 that as it is collecting data for a long session will stop and re-start multiple times during the course of what should only be one complete session.?ÿ The Trimble shops have not been able to find anything wrong with the unit.?ÿ Could this be a related to the directory entries??ÿ

It appears that it is losing power supply than re-starting after it recognizes that power is still present.

as to #1, I do not believe you can leave anything blank, at least not the HI and antenna info. You could put something bogus in for the station name if it does not accept a blank.?ÿ

to answer #2, I recently had an issue with an R10, it would power up with internal battery, then shut down after 45 seconds, even though the batteries (tried several) were fully charged. Fortunately I had an external power cable and external 12V battery (1500 miles from the office). Sent it in to the shop, and they did a reset (which I stupidly did not try), and it fixed the problem. Lesson learned...always try a reset if something is not working correctly. Also, I had some cheap chinese knockoff batteries for my R8 that were slightly too small, any bumping of the R8 would cause it to shut off. Threw those out, now I only buy higher quality batteries, the extra money is well worth it.?ÿ

When I lose radio I sometimes use Trimble DL to run rapid static sessions. Its an android app that let's you set up a few basic survey styles. Very handy when you walk in a mile or two and need two or three corners...

For static I will start the R8 with the DC, this allows the file in the receiver to have the correct HI measurement, point name and all that. When I shut down the survey I do it with the DC and tell it no when it asks to shut down the receiver then I download the static file to the DC. It is so much easier to imput it into Trimble from the DC than from the receiver. Also, sending it to CORS from TBC that way is very quick and hands free, no RINEX conversion or dealing with measurement points. We have had a few issues with the base shutting down and restarting?ÿwhen there is one of the internal batteries in the receiver, I just use an external one anymore.
