I get a township index card from BLM and notice several familiar names.
J.E. Woods...he messed up the infamous Section 7, T17N, R16W, MDM. (Thompson v. State of California)
I've also seen W.H. Carlton and E.N. Chapman before.
Someone marked 8" tan oaks for corners (no B.T.s) over near Fort Bragg but I don't remember if it was one of these guys.
I believe Woods was associated with the Benson Syndicate
Fortunately he's in another part of the township. I'm in Section 35.

The "Benson Syndicate Report" (September 28,1887) lists;
Jas. E. Woods as a "Limited Partner of J.A.B." (J.A.B. being John A. Benson), and indicates that he (Woods) received 15 Contracts, totaling $22,377.13.
Not a very thing to have on your resume...

Couldn't find any dirt on any of the other guys.
At my previous job they had a picture of S.W. Foreman in a bullseye. The surveyor had tried to follow his bogus work in Humboldt County.
Dave: I've forgotten. Are those colored up index cards available anywhere other than BLM Sacramento? Thanks.
I have only gotten them from Sacramento. Just email in your request.
