Wondering if anyone has had any experience with portable printers and whether it is worth bothering with. Looking for something that prints cut sheets on 8.5 x 11 paper. Not sure I should do it in the field, just giving it some thought.

Thanks.

I did it and had what I feel were mixed results. I did go with ink jet as I was concerned about dirt and laser jet

I use an HP F4140 in the truck on a regular basis. It is a multifuction color inkjet printer. It prints, and has a flatbed scanner so I can also scan and copy as well. It works well for me, and has since about 2008.

I have a small plastic 2 drawer system in the back seat that I keep some small stuff in, and I keep the printer on top of that. It runs jusr fine off of a self contained battery/inverter unit that I have, or a regular inverter when the battery unit goes out. It is small enough that it definitely goes with me when I travel, which has been a lot this year.

I think I paid about $40 for it in 2008. I picked up a similar printer for the office a year or so later for about $20.

I recommend it. It is pretty handy when you need to copy or scan that document that the client has, or doing field calcs on the laptop, and then printing a quick point plot.

Thanks Norm and Jimmy. I was looking to see if there was a 12 volt version of a printer instead of using an inverter. Those things are somewhat notorious for bailing out when you need it most. A direct 12 volt seems like the best type. Just more reliable. Not even sure they make one.

HP Officejet 150 is the current model similar to what Jimmy has. It has a lithium battery that allows it to be completely portable. Wall charger takes 110v but they do offer a car charger for $79 on the accessories tab listed in the other products category.

I got a canon iP100 that runs on battery or 12v or 110. Slow but does the job when I need it.
