Will technology ever change the paradigm of reality to the point surveying will not even exist to any significant degree.
I think technology may significantly reduce the need for surveyors, but not eliminate it. Surveyors have a very important ability that I don't think technology will every have - the ability to form an opinion.
and the "legal" right to state an opinion in court
Surveying was created to recover and mark Boundary's, everything else now called surveying does not deal with Boundary's. Boundary Surveyors will be needed until the end of times, the offshoots will be done by others who specialize in each category or tool and by law prevented from doing Boundary Surveying.

One day all the property corners may communicate to the internet - live corner monitoring right on the web
And automatically with no delay after transmitting or attempting to transmit a report of the event, explode when disturbed.

Poll - Will surveying be destroyed by CyberMons?
Gavin, that was beautiful and inspired.
BL, I remember having this conversation with my Dad 30 years ago. We thought then that by now most surveying would be done from helicopters.
Will it matter?
At the rate we're going will it become less important or more important or moot?

Poll - Will surveying be destroyed by CyberMons?
"Gavin, that was beautiful and inspired."
It truly was. I didn't know the gentleman's name was Gavin.
So many of us know each other. We could be an underground society transferring contraband between ourselves
for strictly upright purposes, of course.
What type of contraband would we distribute, I wonder?
Illicit GLO notes, comprimised equipment, undocumented employees, disturbing locations...
Disturbed posters need to know.

"your mama was a fenceline"
that cracked me up....:-P
As long as citizens and non governmental entities have the continued enjoyment of private property ownership... there will be land surveyors.
Advances in technology will likely reduce the total number of land surveyors. The remaining surveyors will just be expected to possess a wider breadth of expertise.
As long as there are Rules and Regulations governing land (ie Zoning, Permitting, Subdividing etc) there will be a need for Surveyors.
How many surveyors will be required is another question; I believe currently there is a glut of surveyors in the industry.
obstructions to GNSS signal will keep surveying alive. Anyone can do RTK, it is not surveying. If you can play smart phone game you can RTK.
it is when you have to use total station is when you are surveying... because it involves a little bit more than pressing buttons
