After much thought I have decided to sit for the PLS exam in Virginia, anybody have any suggestions on references I should be taking with me on exam day? Thanks. 🙂
If it's the last two hours take your drainage manual, Blacks Law, a back up calculator and make sure all your ref material is marked by the little tabs from Office depot for a start...good luck
I second just mapit. I took it a few years ago, walked in with all the reference materials they suggested, tabbed up so I could find things, and passed.
I took it last April. Time management is key in that exam. They tell you there are 50 questions; when I got to question 50, i saw 51, turned the page and saw 52-55. I finished the last question as they called time. First time it has ever taken me the whole time to complete an exam. I passed though. Make sure you have the VDOT Survey Manual, drainage manual, the reference manual from the board's website and all the laws and regulations pertaining to surveyors. Good luck.

Excellent point. remember this is a state specific test so don't be surprised if you get a question like this..
Once you have become licensed what will be on your stamp.
1) Professional Land Surveyor #xxxx
2) Licensed land surveyor #xxxx
3) Certified Land Surveyor #xxxx
4) Land Surveyor Lic. No. xxxx
The answer is 4. Yes...I know the guy who wrote that question.

Don't forget the E&S manual, and know your photogrammetry. Also have something about the Chesapeake Bay Act.

Good suggestion. The Chesapeake Bay Local Assistance Manual is a good reference. Also, the DOT Roads and Bridges Manuals.
Browns Boundary Control and Legal Principles helped me a lot. Also, I think there is an ACSM definitions book that is handy. The VA E & S handbook would have helped me (didn't take it or the drainage manual because they were too big- I regretted that) The VDOT construction safety manual was another one I wish I had taken. I second tabbing the books, but having read them beforehand is invaluable.
