I went to fire up the HP 1055 this morning and found red ink all over the bottom of the plotter and splattered up against the wall that it sat against. WTF! It looks like the ink cartridge exploded but there is no sign of damage to the cartridge or anywhere else on the machine. I ran a couple of plots and everything seems to be working fine.

Ever seen anything like that?

Nope.

I just bought a 1055 that was malfunctioning. I sent it to the shop and got it repaired and it appears to be ok. What is one of those things worth that just came from a dealer?

this machine is at least 5 years old, maybe more. i bought it used and no problems until now.

from scouring the net it looks like it will need a "tube system". this is the system that takes the ink from the cartridge to the printhead. the part alone is $325 from HP and i am getting quotes on labor. i think i am going to let the experts repair this one for me.

if it ain't one thing it is another. but a surveyor without a plotter can't make money!

UPDATE - parts = 400 + labor = 400 from the local HP certified service man
$800 repair total ouch

We had the same thing wrong with the one we bought. Add a black cartidge head in and it cost $1100 to get it fixed.

Heck, you can get a new 110 for that.

We had that happen last year. Our plotter room looked like a murder took place in it. Since we were downsizing and we had two of them, it was not an issue. Also, we were happy it happened in the plotter room with tile on the floor, not the plotter room with carpet.

Well, you could get a Yugo pretty cheap too, but that doesn't mean you want one.

I think the 1055 was around $11,000 new in 2000.

If you are located in a city, it might pay to E-Mail the map to Kinkos or something.

I think we paid around $7,000 for the T1120 44inch which I believe is the new version of the 1055.

Must be something in the air. Our HP 1055 spurted red ink out the back yesterday as well. Removed the hose assembly and soaked the connection to the ink well in Windex and cleaned with Q-tips. It appears that the needle was just clogged. Reconnected the assembly and powered up. Works like a champ and saved the $400 replacement fee. I hope you have similar luck. -- Matt
