Has anyone used a "Pipe Mic2" to measure manhole inverts with? I really need a better way than the old 25' rod stuffed into the end of an invert and relying on the built in clinometer on a brunton compass (and my field crews to read it correctly)to give me reliable accurate data on the lean of the rod and ultimately the invert elevation. I see there is an extension that goes with the kit for another $70, bringing the total to around $265 for the tool. Anyone have any reviews on this item?

I remember some threads about this on the old pob board, http://www.i-boards.com/bnp/pob/. You might look there and do a search if you don't get many comments.
I don't remember any details, whether good or bad.

Leica Disto

Here is another option. It's a Disto E7400x and a home made bracket. The Disto has a tilt sensor and gives you a plumb distance instead of slope distance. If there is a lot of flow in the pipe you still need to use a rod. I've been very happy with it. Sure is nice not having to deal with a filthy rod all the time.

I have one and love it. It works great. I don't have the extention for it, but it would be handy. I can reply better later, or email me. I am on my phone now, and it is a pain trying to post from it.

If you decide to get a pipe mic, I have one of the original ones, new, never used, can make you a good deal. I think the biggest difference was the end, no wheel on mine.

I don't know about the device mentioned, but second the Disto.
Only downside is it is a bit titchy in some of the damp inverts, particularly sewer.
I like that set up. Beats my wrap round wrist and shovel handle.

Leica Disto

Most of the manholes I have to deal with are very active, so I wouldn't be able to trust the Disto return. Too bad, because it's a pretty neat setup.

Leica Disto

I've been thinking of getting one of these.

Looks like it should clip right onto a rod and give you the angle.

Like I said I love the Disto but when there is too much flow to be able to use it seems like this would be the easiest way to get an accurate reading.

I have used one a couple of times. If I had to measure a lot of inverts, I would definitely get one. I currently don't do them that often, so I just use a standard grade rod with a tilt angle gauge.

We purchased one about 5 months ago, have used it on approx. 300 manholes since then. Overall, it has been very useful and easily paid for itself in a few weeks. We had a few problems with very old, small diameter ones, and with newer, offset manholes where we could not even see the sewer line(s) themselves, much less find them by feel with the extension(s).

We are happy we have one.

Pipe Mic2 (For land surveying?)

Have one, major PITA, always having to turn it around so you can see the numbers from the other direction. It isn't even in the chariot anymore! I shoot the C/L elevation and it is usually spot on.

ChrisNik has a double sided rod made just for this type of issue, it seems to work out great for me. Have you had any other issues besides the rod?
