been in the B'root a bit - tough duty- here are a few pics-

Bench mark that may not be as stable as you would like......

Corrosive soils- the mud here was really "stuck" to the cap-

in this pic you can kind of see where the cap is etched/pitted by the soil- another cap that I didn't get a pic of - has the triangle obliterated by the etching.

this is an aluminum cap recovered from the roadway a short way away.

Vertical bench in Grantsdale school.

Yesterday morning's view to the west-

A few good looking gals out for their morning jog.

So precisely where were you? If you say "Montana" I'll come up there and kick yer butt. I see the Bitterroot Valley is in what I've always referred to as Montana's Nose. Where is Clarksdaale School?

Why are the soils so corrosive?

Welllllll, the Grantsdale school is in.....Grantsdale.. what can i say-

We were just south of Hamilton at the Jct of US 93 and MT 38.

I'm thinking the de-icers/ chlorides probably have something to do with the caps near the ptw. They were both covered with about 0.5 feet of sanding material.

the pin and cap that were removed from the road are considerably older than the Ac's I set in 2002- so it had a lot longer exposure. A lot of the gravels/soils here are decomposed granite.

OK, so it's Grantsdale. But now Grantsdale must go through the Hamilton Post Office.
How confusing.

I was going to ask if you stopped in. Rather a redundant question, though. The answer should always be, "Of course!" Hope you said hello to the family for me! Any trip to the Bitterroot is a good trip, indeed. Might make it up there this summer to settle up on my tab. It must be mounting!

JBS

PS Like your shot of the three sisters! They're HOT!! ;o)

Bitterroot-

Was in Hamilton in 1970 or 71, seems that the Coffee Cup was open then, about midway through town on the East side of Main. Driving a Belly Dump on the Highway upgrade and a little city street work. Pulled that same belly dump trailer over the Bitter Roots into Idaho the following winter. The snow blowers had a vertical walled hwy ditch high enough that you could not see out of it, Chains required.
