Peanut prisms - not as accurate as Traverse prisms?

@jim-frame?ÿ ?ÿYep, same here, but GRZ4 on tracking rod, GMP101 on tri / bi pod and GPR1 in the truck. I also use the GMP101 to tell if my tracking rod level bubble is ok.

I am using the correct offset, I've verified the target height too.

Grazing rays might be the problem. Next time I'm traversing I'll stick the peanut prism under the tripod on the nail and compare with the co-ordinates of the Traverse prism.

That the best comparison I can think of that eliminates other sources of error. My traverse prism centering is spot on as is my target height measuring.

@party-chef

Thanks Party i am using ATR. It work great with the large Leica rounds with 0 (-34.4) offset. Why shouldn't it work so well?ÿ with smaller 0 offset prisms?

That thing is way too heavy to tote around.?ÿ I have one, but haven't used it in years -- I'd rather lose lock than weigh down my pole with it.

@john-putnam

I asked about GMP-101s here a couple of years ago and then bought a couple. I can't see any reason to buy anything else for traversing. Very compact. High quality. I haven't found its maximum range yet, not even close. And not particularly expensive as these things go.?ÿ ?ÿ

@fobos8

It works well with the big prism because of where the pivot point of the assembly is, likewise the 17.5 prism assembly has a good pivot point.?ÿ

Nodal center and all that.

Do the test it, it is easy to see, not having a 17.5 on hand to compare will dampen the mood though.

I have never played with the Leica zero mini but have with typ 30 seco etc, vs Leica 17.5 and they do not hold up at all.

Some nice options nicely presented by bohnenstingl?ÿ

I am guessing that the zero offset mini is the source of your problems. It is not the accuracies of the prism that are fouling?ÿ you up but the pointing, especially if you are using ATR/Robotic aiming.?ÿ

Set up the gun in tracking and run a trial where you point the mini directly at the scope and then rotate it a little side to side and up down, you will see the departures. You can do this with your eyeball also.

Would have been better to go with the 17.5...(Or full robot with a mini 360)

I think Party-chef has it.

I borrowed a 17.5mm Leica offset peanut prism from a friend today. Leica does 2 peanut prisms, a Leica 0 offset and the 17.5mm Leica offset.

If you look at what appears to be the centre point of the prism on the 0 Leica offset one when you rotate it vertically the centre point moves dramatically from the 100mm target height pivot point.

With the 17.5mm Leica offset one when you rotate it vertically the centre point stays 100mm from the bottom of the mini pole.

Surely this is why I'm getting crap z values with the peanut prism I've been using?

Regards, Andrew
