OK, I have a Pacific Crest, PDL 4500 rover radio. It seems that it needs battery replaced. OK.
The manual says that it is a Lithium ion battery, and is non user serviceable, and has to be sent to Pac Crest, for replacement.

Well, I'm handy with a voltmeter, soldering gun, and generally do this kind of stuff myself. I don't want to send it off. I want to do it myself.

I understand it should be charged, before installing it. It is a 3.7 volt battery. I have found a source to buy it for about 40 bucks incl shipping.

Have any of you ever replaced one of these yourself?

Is there a need to "Tune" the radio, in conjunction with battery replacement?

Will it retain it's knowledge of frequencies, or do I need to do a "Keep Alive" step, so it has power at all times, during replacement?

Why does Pac Crest say NO to user replacement?

I'm looking for information. I was not super happy with the last time I sent it in. It never really held a charge very well, after they shipped it back to me.

Thanks in advance, for any answers.

And, as always, thanks Wendell & Angel for this forum, to ask questions, and share knowledge.

Nate

I've been awaiting a response. I don't have a PDL, but I'm not shy about performing surgery on my gear and am curious to see what the Pac Crest situation is like. Sorry I can't be of any help on this one.

Whellll I went to order the battery today, and found that New Zealand seems to be the ONLY source for me to order from. Has Trimble so tight a grip on this, that we cannot even buy these in USA?

If I have to I will send to NZ to get it.

I have sent it to Pac crest and had it replaced 2x, and still it does not hold a charge like it did when I first got it. I have a feeling, that they want to sell a new GPS system, and are not fully supporting this old radio.

Any idea where in USA to get a battery?

Thanks,

Nate

Nate, did you ever find a place to get a replacement battery for your PDL?

Nate, for what it is worth my guess is the same as yours.?ÿ I think that you need to keep the circuit alive while you replace the battery.?ÿ Clip a same voltage battery down the supply wires a bit and do your surgery

I did order the batteries. I have an extra, if I can find it. I did soldier it in. It worked fine, til I got the Javad. Now, I am spoiled.
