Kent..You are SO right!

15 minutes minimum per line you want to measure.

I have about 12k into my system of 3 ProMark3s including poles and push-button tripods. You could put together a set for less on Ebay.

We borrow a basic RTK base-rover from a friend to do some work if need be, and purchasing a less expensive L1 set was something we consider. We were unsure of how long one would occupy using those.

you can do stop&go which requires a minimum of 15" per shot. I use it for topo, very similar to RTK.

RTK is nice but there's only been a few times I wish I had it. You can do most things without RTK. I rented once and another time I just made sure I had intervisible pairs so I could come back and use my total station for my "RTK" work.

If a VRS system is available, and you have enough work to support it, I would suggest you get a dual frequency rover and take advantage of it. You will spend about 20 to 25 thousand but you will cut your field time down to 25 percent or less of what it takes to traverse.

Otherwise, I think you can get a couple of pro-mark single frequency's for 3 or 4 thousand and you will spend about 30 minutes or so on occupation time, depending on baseline length, and a little more to post process.

Like Mike said, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it;-)

Cheers,
Radar

Thanks.

Also I did not see that Plutae made a post about the timing and precision, so I am enjoying that one.

For me, I just want to spend some hours constraining many connected traverses, so the L1, 15-30 minutes option sounds very good. Also, good to just set up while doing a topo, and let it run while occupying nearby.

is your gun a topcon...They have the worst optics in the bunch

wnat good optics go with a Nikon and older one I dont know about the newer ones

Nikon has some of the best optics and their EDM will burn through a brick wall

To bad they didn't keep up with the times

I had a Nikon total station before the topcon. Maybe the optics where better but overall I think the Topcon is a better instrument. that's just my unscientific feeling on the subject. The Nikon seems to have a hard time reversing an angle.

I have never owned a 1 second total station (modern era instrument). I did look into it when I purchased my Leica 1105 7 years ago, but the extra cost did not warrant it in my opinion.

To get to Paul's question, I did not really see any difference in optic's while I was in test drive mode 7 years ago and these eyes have been looking through one scope or another for 35 years.

BTW,

Not to take sides on the GPS debate, but I bought my first L1 units (Locus) 10 years ago (boy we are cooking now!!!!) and then moved to RTK (Wow!!!, I am the king!!!).

Nothing better than rolling up on any jobsite and knowing you have the tools in the toolbox to kick that jobs arse.

L1 is cheap and RTK is getting cheaper, look into it.
