Remember; we can chain with a 99 foot steel tape and get very good closure results !!
When I started up I did everything transit - and- tape -- we beat 1: 10,000 routinely. But not with a cloth tape and certainly not working solo. As to the video -- won't prove much unless you can prove that it was done for a paying client who had reason to expect that a professional standard was being met. The plat match-ups are no coincidence but that too will be hard to prove.
Also, I'd have to quibble with your topic title. No way what you describe was how folks were taught to do things in the "old school." No way that was how surveyors routinely worked back in the pre- EDM day.
