A local authority has a Leica TCR705 that has not done much work and has sat in a cupboard for a few years.
The small engineering firm I work for has been offered the instrument to look at and come up with a price.
I suspect we would not use it very much, and would not want to offer too much for it. Being a 5" instrument would have some limitations for set out. We may try to use it to measure to power lines for clearance reports, and to fill in detail we can't get with GNSS RTK in bush/forest and urban areas around buildings.
I am aware that the batteries may need to be replaced or re packed. The instrument should include prism, pole, chargers and accessories.
Not sure about serial cable and Lecia Geo Office required to download data, and if we need to buy updated version of the software/license. Can we get data in and out to Civil 3d by txt, csv, dxf.
Looking for advice about the instrument.
Civil 3D will handle all of those formats. We have Trimble gear and SurvCE on data collectors so I don't personally know about Leica, but I do know that a privateer brought exactly that instrument (Leica TCR705) into our office a couple of years ago (before we had SurvCE) - as a bare instrument plus a battery and I think a cable - and I had a sh.t of a job getting the data off it using "free" stuff available online.
Looks like on ebay etc they go for USD1000. But if its something someone wants to giveaway and you don't really want/need it then probably much less. Also keep in mind that in NZ I got a full Trimble 5601 robotic setup off Tradme for less than NZD800 - so old gear like this in NZ doesn't hold much value.
Yeah the question is what would I need to download/upload the total station and convert to ascii txt, csv files. Would I need to buy updated LGO or other software/License. Is it user friendly and usable, or would it be a dog?

You can use Leica Geo Office Tools I believe it was always free. The "coordinate manager" doesn't work on OS above XP though.
Maybe with a workaround. There was one discussed on another forum. I can PM you a link if you want.
I did use it with XP and going back to the serial cable was a bit of a pain, also the software did seem a little bit unresponsive/buggy from memory. Will they let you try it out before purchase? They are great instruments apart from this.
One other thing is that I believe "reference line" was an optional extra on the 700 series. I would not want an instrument without it. Maybe you can still get the licence for this?

That surprises me. All other 2nd hand stuff seems so much more expensive in NZ (than the UK). I suppose you have to be in the right place at the right time.

The impression I get is that the market in NZ and UK is quite small, so if you have something old and used to sell, there's not many people around who want it. There are of course sellers around quoting international prices, but they don't sell.
My problem with my TCR305 and my 307 is that the display faded out and is not replaceable.
