Jim, this is an issue we talk about all the time at NGS. Even though we have an extensive network of state geodetic advisors (unfortunately not enough though) and the open access to our geodetic information center for the public my experience is that the vast majority of users (many different disciplines not just surveyors) don't know who we are or that we even exist. The fundamental issues of datums, datum realizations, and other elements of basic geodesy are unknown to the vast majority of these new users and they will waste time, effort and money on trying to figure out why my cm level position doesn't match your cm level position by a meter (or more)!
Screw it all. We are going to smoots. It's the only sensible thing with all these changes.
Thank you Deral - a voice of reason to lead us out of the wilderness. Bless you.
I'm going to use cubits. At least that comes from a divine source!
