New CFeDS qualifications
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
New Qualification for CFedS Program
The Certified Federal Surveyor (CFedS) Program has recently modified the qualification for enrollment in the Program. Pre-registered/pre-licensed applicants who have passed the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Surveying examination are now eligible to enroll in the Program. Pre-registered/pre-licensed applicants who pass the CFedS examination will not become certified until they become registered/licensed in at least one State, territory, or the District of Columbia. In the interim between passing the CFedS examination and becoming registered they will have the same continuing education and renewal requirements as a CFedS.
The CFedS Program was developed to ensure that land boundary surveys for federally recognized tribes, individual Indians or Alaska Natives are executed in accordance with accepted professional standards, and are in compliance with the current policies and legal interpretations of the Department of the Interior and Bureau of Land Management. The Program consists of seven courses, a certification examination, and required continuing education courses. There are currently over 550 CFedS registered in 44 states. For information about how to register, the CFedS Program, or to find a CFedS in your area, go to: www.cfeds.org.
Where are CFedS exams held?
Their web site does not have much info and before I send them $1,200.00 was wondering if anyone knew where the exams are held and are there additional fees for them?
Thank You,
Scott

The exam is not given at any specific location. You are responsible to find a proctor satisfactory to the CFedS Program Manager who is willing to spend a day with you, such as a CFedS, teacher, NSPS CET proctor, librarian, BLM Indian Land Surveyor (BILS) or a number of other people outlined by the CFedS program. You submit their name and qualifications before the exam and will be notified if they are acceptable. The test is mailed to them and administered as any other proctored exam. Exams are scheduled 3 times a year on a Friday.
The cost of the exam (up to 3 attempts) is included in the course fee.
It is a very worthwhile course.

Thank You Tyler,
It does sound worth while, a lot of federal and Indian lands in these area, plus good PLSS education.

As of yet, CfedS is not required to survey any of the lands it is intended to cover. Does anyone know when, if ever, it will be required?
I have heard from others that it has not helped them to get any jobs. That, with the continuing Ed required (beyond what's required for your state license), I have not seen a return on value.
I have examined the curriculum and it looks like great material to expand a surveyors knowledge. It would be nice to see more of a payoff than another title after your name. That is what has kept me from pursuing the certification.
