I am in the process of purchasing a used Topcon Total Station for my father inlaw in PERU.

He has been old school for 30 years. (Leica 1969 vintage). Recently been renting a Topcon TS and now wants to purchase one.

I have little to no knowledge of what I am looking for to help him out.

Budget $2500-$3000

Here is what I am looking at

GTS 300 1" $2800
GTS 310 1" $2800
GTS 312 3" $2500
GTS 510 2" $3000
GTS 702 3" $2800

Any input and help will be greatly appreciated.

I would look for a 3000 series Topcon. It is a generation newer with features that are worth having. We've had a 3003 for 8 or 9 years in daily use with no problems.

I don't know the specifics of those models, but the most important feature to me would be reflectorless capability. Other than that, any instrument that meets your accuracy requirements would probably be sufficient.

I have a GPT3005LW that I would consider selling. Only used by me, always carried in the box.

It has Bluetooth and long range reflectorless edm (2000'). It is a five second instrument.

I would want more than your prices listed above to let it go.

PM me an offer if you are interested.

I talk quite a bit with the guys in the shop at my local topcon dealer. They've told me that the best Topcon gun as far as repair record is the 300 series. Those guns are pretty much bullet proof. If you are shipping the gun to Peru, and you don't have a local dealer, I think having a good solid gun would be very important. I personally have a 300 series gun that is a backup and it is solid. I also think newer Topcon guns are usually in the shop more often...

Topcon Battery

I would highly recommend also getting a Daysaver backup battery for the gun. They last many years and last much longer than on board batteries.

There are no new service parts for any of those models, all discontinued. I'd stick with a new Nikon DTM or NPL322 under 4k.

PERU eh?
I'm thinking 97% of peruvian survey equipment no longer has parts being produced for it. Even if I'm wrong how many service techs are there in Peru?

All those 300 series guns are tanks. Personally I have not ran the others. So, pick the prettiest one (least beat up) with a case to match (least beat up) with recelled batteries and a backup battery.

Reflectorless is a modern day must have.

And, the narrow beam is usually better, than the broad beam.
