I attended a CE class last fall with James Davis, one of the surveyors that retraced the line. His presentation was without a doubt the most informative CE I have attended.
South Carolina charges a lower per-gallon tax on gasoline and a higher property tax on automobiles than North Carolina. So folks who live in, say, Gastonia, NC can pay low taxes both ways.
Here's an article from the New York Times which, for some reason, loves to write articles about North Carolina. The article is a couple of years old, but it contains some interesting details.
