Snow is rapidly turning to mush.?ÿ Yesterday was cold but nearly dry.?ÿ Last night brought the appearance of four inches or so of very wet snow.?ÿ The temp has climbed to 31 F and partly sunny.?ÿ Other parts of the state received up to 12 inches, I'm told.?ÿ May pull on my good mud boots this afternoon.
How many cattle do you tend to?
?ÿ
Good question.?ÿ Count is going up daily.?ÿ Somewhere around 100.?ÿ Black, white, red, yellow, grey and a mixture of those.?ÿ We do not discriminate based on color, only horn length.?ÿ Although, I did have a Longhorn bull years ago for breeding heifers only.?ÿ Got them through a low birth weight calving situation as heifers became cows, then sold the calves.?ÿ Had over 200 for a long time.?ÿ Too many irons in the fire anymore.?ÿ ?ÿ Have one horned cow, but she has learned that I AM THE BOSS OF HER.
Had over 40 llamas at one time, as well.?ÿ Sold out when they shot up in value.
No horses, sheep, goats, chickens, etc.?ÿ Did own a couple of donkeys for about six months once.?ÿ Bought at $20 and sold for $100, so that was OK.?ÿ Trouble was they did not share well at the feed bunk.?ÿ Same story with a couple horses we once had.
Bought at $20 and sold for $100, so that was OK
I though the original post was going to be aboot himin and hawin...
Good question.?ÿ Count is going up daily.?ÿ Somewhere around 100...?ÿ
Are they all in same place, or do you have to run around to three or four pastures to get to them?
Feeding in only two locations now.?ÿ By Spring they will spread out over five or six places, depending on my mood and whether I buy more or sell more than average.?ÿ Need to improve the overall average because I tend to hang on to the old girls longer than I probably should.?ÿ One that calved yesterday has had a healthy calf every year since I bought her eight years ago when she was only six.
Everything I touch is non-profit.?ÿ Just ask the IRS.?ÿ But, somehow the list of assets keep growing.
?ÿ Currently so credit worthy I could borrow enough to make sure there's nothing left to pay for my burial.?ÿ Borrowing is far too easy.?ÿ Haven't been doing nearly enough of it lately.?ÿ Starting to feel bad about not being far enough in debt.?ÿ I was further in debt nearly 50 years ago than I am today.?ÿ Took out my first cattle loan from the local bank a couple months prior to my 14th birthday.?ÿ I've lasted longer than that bank.?ÿ?ÿ
My farmland fits inside a nearly isosceles triangle of 6.6 miles by 7.0 miles by 8.5 miles at the extreme corners, with the exception of two outliers.?ÿ But, that's nothing compared to a surveyor I know with cattle 900 miles from his house as a very exhausted crow flies or closer to 1150 miles by road.
That mush is turning solid now.?ÿ Overnight low near 10 F with a wind chill around zero.
