This appeared on the web site of Civil and Structural Engineer magazine, but NGS has an announcement and it's in other publications as well. Just Google it and you can see them all. Seems to be a big effort.

I noticed in the pic there is a bronze disc sticking out of the ice. I hope nobody had to lug a Punjar up that hillside....:pinch:

....or even worse....

"Where are the spare batteries?"

"Thought you had 'em..."

"I thought you had them!"

"Hey Bill, you got any spare batteries?"

"I thought you two had them....."

‰ÛÏThe USGS and its partners are using the best available modern GPS survey equipment and techniques to ensure the new elevation will be determined with a high level of accuracy and confidence.‰Û

You heard it here first folks... The Trimble R10 is the best available modern GPS unit. How do you like those apples, Leica!?!

[sarcasm]Did you get your environmental permits before trampling all that snow?[/sarcasm]

I'm sure there is some kind of moth or weasel or microbe that only survives at that altitude.

Beautiful picture. Thanks.
